Have you seen a blue tit with colour rings on its leg in your garden, at your school or even just as you are walking around the town? If yes please visit our Blue Tit Sightings? You will be helping research that is going on in your area. |
The St Andrews Nestboxes Project was set up in 2014 to monitor blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) breeding around St Andrews, Scotland. There are currently 80 nestboxes, divided up between The St Andrews Botanic Gardens and around The University of St Andrews grounds. A further 10 nestboxes were put up in 2016 at Cambo Estates, Kingsbarns.
Our main focus is on how blue tits build their nests, what they put in their nest and when they start building. All fledglings from our nestboxes have colour rings so we can identify them from year to year. This allows us to see how individuals may or may not change in the way they build nests. We also collect data on breeding success and record any colour ringed blue tits we see throughout the year.
Please visit our Research page for more information on the current work we do, and why we are focusing on blue tits.
